The Eighteen Arhats are eighteen enlightened disciples of Buddha in Buddhism. They vowed to stay in the mortal world to protect Dharma, relieve people’s sufferings and guide all living beings.
Long ago, there were only sixteen arhats. Later, two more were added in Chinese Buddhism, forming the group of Eighteen Arhats that we know today. Each arhat has a unique appearance and special powers.
In Chinese culture, the Eighteen Arhats symbolize peace, protection, wisdom and good blessings. People believe they can ward off misfortune, bring safety and good luck. They are commonly carved on tea cups, sculptures and paintings as a classic cultural motif.
